Community Legal Aid (CLA) and its affiliate, Central West Justice Center (CWJC), are seeking law students and recent graduates who are interested in applying for Skadden, Equal Justice Works, Justice Catalyst, or other post-graduate fellowships to begin in the fall of 2024.

CLA and CWJC are the non-profit civil legal aid programs serving the low-income and elderly residents of central and western Massachusetts. CLA and CWJC have a combined staff of over 150 talented, dedicated people working out of five offices. Through our effective advocacy in more than 8,000 cases each year, some of the most vulnerable residents of our region obtain safe and stable housing; get needed services in school; access unemployment, disability and other benefits to stabilize their income; break free from abuse and exploitation; and obtain humanitarian-based immigration relief. The vast majority of our clients have household incomes that fall below 125% of the federal poverty level (in 2022, $2,891 monthly for a family of four). In addition to direct legal representation, we provide community legal education to service providers, community groups, and private attorneys and operate the region’s largest pro bono program for private attorney volunteers. More information about CLA and CWJC can be found at www.communitylegal.org and www.cwjustice.org.

With full service offices located in Worcester, Springfield, Northampton, Pittsfield, and Fitchburg (as well as multiple outreach offices located across central and western Massachusetts), CLA and CWJC offer exciting opportunities for individuals interested in creating fellowship projects in the areas of migrant and seasonal farmworker law, family law, immigration law, public benefits law, elder law, employment law, education law, racial justice law, re-entry services, housing law, or other innovative practice areas. CLA and CWJC encourage applicants to propose their own project ideas if known.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • JD anticipated by May 2024 or recent law graduate.
  • Experience working or interning in public interest law is required; experience in the project focus area a plus.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Candidates interested in pairing with CLA or CWJC to apply for fellowships should apply by submitting a resume and cover letter (including a brief description of the type of project they are proposing and where they heard about the fellowship) to Ingrid Liu at iliu@cla-ma.org. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. For questions regarding the fellowship, please contact Laura Hancock Barry at LHBarry@cla-ma.org.
